Issue 18
19th January 2012

Dear Parents,

My first three weeks at Quarry Bay School have been very busy and enjoyable.
Our girls and boys competed in football tournaments late last week. Their teamwork was admirable. The students played with a determination and encouraged one another to give their best. They were a credit to the Quarry Bay School community.

The approaching holiday is an opportunity for your child to take some rest. If you want to support some learning at home over the holiday break I would encourage you to focus on reading for pleasure with your child. Discussing books is a good way to ask open-ended questions and have your child talk about their understanding of a story or topic. Oral language is an important part of building a child’s reading comprehension.

It was nice to meet parents at the PTA Meeting on Tuesday evening. Please support the PTA’s Read-a-thon current initiative. More details will be emailed to all parents tomorrow (Friday 20th).

Well done to our Year 4 students for their performances this week. The students performed for their parents and peers as part of the current unit of inquiry. They used stories to express themselves through drama and dance.  Performing in front of an audience is a great way to develop confidence. Thanks to all staff and parents for your support and involvement.

A special assembly will be held on Friday to celebrate Chinese New Year. Students will enjoy performances by their peers, dressing up and being involved in a range of learning experiences provided by members of our Mandarin teaching staff.

I look forward to seeing the students on Wednesday 1st February after the Chinese New Year holiday.

Dress Red Day

To celebrate Chinese New Year, tomorrow (Friday) we will have a Dress Red Day. Please encourage your child/ren to celebrate this occasion by coming to school in red or traditional Chinese dress.

Please remember that tomorrow is normal school hours and school will finish at the normal time.
