Tomorrow you will receive Term 2 Unit of Inquiry reports for your children via the Gateway. We expect them to be uploaded at approximately 4pm and you can access them through the normal login process using your Gateway family login details.
If your child is in Years 3 – 6 you will soon be able to access your child’s INCAs data for Reading and Mathematics. There is a 'Standardised Assessments' link under your child's demographic information and the INCAs results will appear there early next week.
These tests were carried out in September and information was shared with you during our November parent consultations. It is important to remember that the INCAs test is based on a sampling principle and it is only one part of a larger assessment process that we use within school.
If you have any queries regarding this information please do not hesitate to contact us.
Regards,

Year 6 Conference
On Wednesday this week, the year 6 teachers organised an exciting new way to launch their ‘sharing the Planet’ unit which will be the unit the students share for their exhibition.
It was an exciting day with the children learning like adults would at a conference.
The day started with all children in the hall for a Keynote address from Alex Steffen, an expert on sustainability, to give the children an overview of the key issues associated with ‘Sharing the Planet’ (we didn’t actually fly him here from Canada, we showed his excellent TED talk video – you can watch it here if you would like to know more).
Next, each student chose to attend three workshops to give them a broader understanding of the big idea ‘Our future depends on ethical and sustainable use of resources'. They chose from: sustainability of Chinese Language, Technology and the Big Idea, A sustainable home in Hong Kong, The Big Idea through art, The Big Idea through science, Fact and bias within the big idea, Connections to previous learning and What is Action?
It was great to have workshops presented by members of staff from throughout the school, not just year 6. We also had students from year 3 and 5 sharing their learning from their ‘Sharing the Planet’ units – and they did so with amazing confidence and enthusiasm!
In the afternoon there were a range of stations set up for children to record their learning or take it further. We had a tech zone where they watched selected videos and used connect - extend - challenge to reflect on their learning. There was also a reflection zone for children to record their thoughts on the day using Voicethread, blogs and video. They contributed to a huge graffiti wall, collected images to represent the big idea in the art zone and there were also health, science and social studies zones. You can see examples of what we did on Qoodle here: http://qbs.lg.esf.edu.hk/course/view.php?id=64
The students really enjoyed this way of working and the teachers are already discussing how we might do the next one! Maybe we could persuade some of our expert parents to come in as speakers or workshop presenters?? Just let us know if you have something to share ( donna.morley@qbs.edu.hk)
It was an excellent day and a fabulous learning experience for the children which really helped them to tune in to the big ideas for this unit and allowed them to choose their interests and ways of learning.
The year 6 team did a fantastic job putting it all together and it was great to see teachers from across the school working together to make it happen.

Book Week
What great time was had by all last week! The week was kicked off with a fabulous assembly by 5C and 2B. The children had worked hard at writing their own scripts using Google Docs and presented very well. There was a fabulous video with children and staff singing along which made us all smile and had us singing all week. Thank you Ms. Cameron and Mr. Cadman for putting in so much time on this.
Tuesday saw the Year 2's and 3's working with Sarah Brennan, a Hong Kong based author. She read from her new book and shared ideas about the writing process. Nury Vittachi wowed the Year 6's with his stories and anecdotes about innovating through writing. This fitted perfectly with their last unit and helped make lots of connections.
The Book Fair on Wednesday proved to be very popular and it was great to see so many of our students and teachers going home with handfuls of books. The Simplified Chinese section was particularly good and Mrs. Tang and I managed to fit in some shopping too. Watch out for some new Simplified Chinese books in the Learning Centre.
Friday was also the 'Teachers Vs Students' Battle of the Books competition. The teachers proved that they were no match for the BoB team who managed to beat us by a substantial margin. Oh well, there is always next year!
For many people their favourite moment was dancing in the playground on Friday morning. The costumes the children and teachers wore were fantastic and it was an amazing atmosphere. Thank you to all those that took part and were particularly creative without spending any money.
A final thanks must go to all those teachers, parents and EAs who went out of there way to make Book Week such a success. Reading in different languages, book making, story telling, drama and illustration workshops…the list goes on. It is great to be part of such a willing and enthusiastic community.
Roll on next year!

Beaver Scouts is the youngest section of the Scout Association, and has been running at Quarry Bay School for over 15 years. QBS students, both boys and girls in Years 2 and 3, are eligible to join and then go on to Cubs and Scouts. The current leader of our Beaver Colony, Alison Kerr, is going to ‘retire’ at the end of this school year, so we are looking for a replacement/s.
Leading the Beaver Scouts is a great way to contribute to the all-round development of young people and interact with both adults and children in the QBS community and the scouting community in Hong Kong. Basic training is provided by the Scout Association, and Alison is very willing to help new leaders settle in.
If you are interested in this voluntary position, please contact Alison at kerrwood@netvigator.com – no experience required, but a free afternoon is necessary. Beavers currently meet on Wednesdays after school at QBS.
Looking forward to hearing from you as soon as possible so that you can observe how Beavers is run in Term 3 before Alison leaves.
