QBS Newsletter - Issue 33

Issue 33
19th May 2011

Dear Parents,

The public holiday dates for the next school year have now been confirmed so the final QBS calendar can be found on our website under Term Calendar. The 30th and 31st January are still provisional closure dates as we have requested a PYP workshop from IBO and we are waiting for them to confirm this date.  Each school is allocated 5 CPD days for staff training so our school will be closed for students on those days. I would also like to remind all parents that we encourage parents only to take holidays during school closures as we do find that when children have additional time away from school for family holidays it can have a negative impact on their progress.

As we have begun to make plans for the year ahead I thought it is a good time to share with you some personal news. After much soul searching I have decided that it is time for me to leave Hong Kong, I have submitted my resignation to ESF and will be leaving QBS at the end of December 2011. It has been a very hard decision as QBS is such a wonderful school to work in and HK has such a lot to offer, but I think it is time for me to either return home or to relocate closer to home. When I leave in December I will have spent 8 rewarding years working for ESF and it is time for a new challenge.

I am looking forward to starting off the new school year in August so that we are well prepared for another great year and I will have a full term to work closely with the new Leadership Team to ensure that the transition for the school is a smooth one.

Regards,
Debra Gardiner

School Bus Application - New School Year 2011~2012
In order to reduce our carbon footprints we are going online with our Bus Applications for the next school year. We hope to save a few trees by saving the amount of paper being sent home in the bus application packs.

Points to Note:
• Bus Routes & Schedules List: please do look through this document carefully as some routes/stops have been revised/amended as well as timings changed to ensure a faster and prompt journey for riders to and from school. Some changes have been made due to traffic conditions en-route.
• Application Deadline Date: please adhere to the deadline date, which is 27th May 2011. All applications must arrive at the PTA Office with payment (either full year in advance; or Term 1- immediate payment, and post-dated cheques for Term 2 & 3).
• Incomplete Applications: Applications which are received as per our requirements will be given priority, on a first come first serve basis. All Incomplete applications will be sent home to complete the formalities.
• One Way Journey: is not offered unless seats are available.
• Priority:  will be given to all applications received with completed formalities; and to those paying full year in advance.
• All Bus Applications are approved on first come first serve basis.
• Bus Rules: All parents and students have to comply with our bus rules and safety requirements.
• Bus Escorts: All the buses have Bus Escorts who are in-charge of their respective buses and all students and parents are requested to follow any instructions given by them. The Bus Escorts are employed for the safety of all persons travelling on the school buses.

There are of course many other options in and around Hong Kong and although we cannot endorse or promote these external services it can be useful to share information with parents.

Drama Group
A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Last Friday our Drama Group, led by Mr Boon, performed an excellent rendition of William Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’.

It is no easy task to set the complex Shakespearian language in a modern day setting but the students did a superb job and the audience were engrossed.
Students in Year 5 have been doing report writing as part of their English work and they wrote some excellent reports following the performance. Here are some quotes from the students:

“ The actors were frozen in what looked like an ordinary street – people on their phones, chatting to each other  -  anything you might see on a normal street. The hushed whispering grew into a quiet murmuring and by the time all the classes had arrived the hall was buzzing with excited chatter, but the audience fell silent as soon as the actors unfroze and the play started.”
                                                        Xiao-ke Lu, 5S

“ Instead of an old-fashioned play, this act was made with old-fashioned speeches and with modern style to make an eye-catching, delicious dish for the audience to feast on. The actors made the ordinary school play look like an oscar-winning play instead”

Message from the PTA Chairman
To help us run a safe and efficient school bus service, please remember to notify us, as soon as possible, if your child will be involved in after school activities or will be a ‘walker’ at pta@qbs.edu.hk

How are we doing?
As the school year draws to a close and planning for the next school year begins, we have been looking at what we do to see if there are any areas we can improve on.  A couple of areas we are looking at are the PTA section of the website and communicating with you, our members.  Myself, the Vice Chairman and a Parent Rep will be attending an ESF course, ‘Connecting with the School Community’ on 31st May to see if there are any lessons we can learn.

If you have any comments / suggestions on how we are doing, what we can do better or suggestions for future events then please let us know on ptasuggestions@qbs.edu.hk

Thank you,
Fiona Bishop M.B.E
Chairman

Gaelic Football
On Monday we had the first Gaelic Football Coaches come in to school. The children really enjoyed the sessions, which are heavily skills based. Over the following 5 weeks children will be learning a range of skills and techniques, tactics and strategies in Gaelic Football which are transferable to other invasion games, especially basketball, soccer and rugby.

The following links have been shared with the children to give them some insight of what the game of Gaelic involves.

Tennis Ball Donation?
Our supply of tennis balls has practically disappeared! If you have any old/spare tennis balls or you know a tennis coach who might have some old tennis balls they no longer use, please ask if they would like to donate them to QBS. There is a box available in the gym so the tennis balls can be donated there.

Thank You

Uniform & Stationery Prices
With reference to last week’s newsletter, Mrs Debra Gardiner mentioned that prices for all uniforms will be increased in the coming 2011-2012 school year starting August 2011. This is mainly due to an increase in the cost of materials and supplier costs in China. For the past 2 years we have tried to absorb any increases, but regretfully this year, as the increase is substantial, we are not in the situation to absorb it completely – hence the increase. However, we are pleased to inform you that we have stock of uniforms available at the current prices which are available for purchase on or before 22nd June 2011.
